Dressing Gown with High Collar

Reproduction c. 1500 Spanish brocade from Sartor Bohemia, Silk and Rayon.

Minimal internal structure. Lined in light blue worsted wool, cream silk taffeta facings, beetled linen interfacing. Double-breasted cut, collar closure at shoulder seam. “50/50” sleeves with false cuffs, set into armhole by hand.

This design drew influence from typical early- to mid-twentieth century men’s dressing gowns as well as traditional Eastern European shirts—which often closed at the side of the neck rather than at the centre front. The large-motif jaquard was a challenge to pattern-match efficiently. However, I was able to neatly align the patch-pockets and the front closure. The sleeves and collar were impossible to match exactly, though the pattern is kept level across seams and mirrored exactly on both sides of the garment.
